Recipes for low-sugar living + treats for special occasions


"You're so granola," laughed my brotheras I nibbled on the granola I had made while staying with them. He was eating ice cream. 

"Sounds about right," I laughed.

Suggested Ingredients:   

Nuts: pecans, almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, pignolas, Brazil nuts, cashews, pistachios, and macadamia nuts. And a few seed options: chia, sesame, flax, hemp, sunflower, pumpkin seeds. 

Spices: cinnamon, cayenne pepper, nutmeg, cardamom 

Scents: rose water, orange flower water, tea  

Extras: Chocolate, coconut, dried fruits

2/21/15: dessert granola: hazelnuts, almonds, semisweet chocolate chips, coconut, cinnamon, and a pinch of cayenne pepper.

Chop and combine pecans and walnuts (One 8 oz. bag each at TJs),  the 4 cups of old fashioned oats and spices in a large bowl. Set aside. 

Heat 1 1/2 cups lightly packed brown sugar and 1/3 cup water over medium-high heat until it begins to boil, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and mix in vanilla extract and olive oil. Pour mixture over the bowl of nuts and oats and stir to combine. 

Spread the mixture evenly over a cookie sheet and bake for 70 minutes at 250 degrees F.
